Easy No Yeast Naan Bread

I loved the naan bread recipe I previously posted but I think I am even more in love with this new Easy No Yeast Naan Bread recipe I have created.  So I thought it’s time for an update.

Easy No Yeast Naan Bread

It’s also very simple to make but I think it’s much softer and lighter. For this Easy No Yeast Naan Bread recipe I did not use Greek yogurt.

This Easy No Yeast Naan Bread makes the lightest, fluffiest naan bread and the bonus is you can have naan bread anytime you wish, because it’s that simple to make. It’s soft and slightly chewy, exactly like naan bread should be.

You can pop some of your favourite toppings on the naan bread and you can have pizza too. It’s so good you will defintely make them over and over again.

I love keeping my recipes simple with ingredients we have at hand. I hate it when recipes call for all sorts of exotic ingredients and I have to rush off to the shop to get them.

As I am getting older I think I appreciate keeping life as simple as possible. I am enjoying my time at home and the uncomplicated life we have.

Let’s hope I can continue keeping my recipes the same way.  Thank you to all those that appreciate the simple recipes.

Naan Bread has become so popular that I think everyone has their own favourite recipe. Of course, it’s always a winner when served with an authentic Indian curry.

You can make flatbread, naan bread and pizza with this dough. It’s my favourite recipe for now and everyone thinks I’ve put loads of effort into making them.

Ingredients Required

Don’t we love it when we don’t have to rush to the shops to buy ingredients. Well this is one of those recipes that uses basic pantry staples.

You will require cake wheat flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, vegetable or olive oil and milk

How to make the Naan Bread

There’s nothing complicated about this naan bread and you don’t need to be a skilled baker.  All the dry ingredients are mixed together, you then add the liquids and form a soft dough.

The dough will be really sticky at first but as you knead, for at least 5 minutes it becomes less sticky. Do not be tempted to add more flour.

You then rub  some oil on the dough. Grease a bowl with some oil, place the dough in the bowl and rest for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes knead for a few seconds. Cut into 8 pieces and roll out into thin elongated or round shapes.

My shaped were about 15cmx25cm and it was perfect. You then toast them on a non-stick pan until it bubbles on one side.

Flip it over and toast the other side. Keep them warm in between a clean kitchen towel until ready to serve.

I hope you get to try this recipe and if you do please drop me a comment and a star rating. It is always appreciated.

Ingredients

  • 1&1/2 cup cake wheat flour
  • 1&1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tspn sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil plus a little extra
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk

Butter

  • 2 tbsp butter melted
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • fresh coriander chopped

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl mix the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder together. Mix in the oil
  • Add the yogurt and milk. Knead into a soft dough, for about 5 minutes. It will be sticky at first but will be less sticky as you knead. Do not be tempted to add more flour
  • Place the dough in a bowl greased with oil, cover it and place it in a warm place for 30 minutes
  • Knead again for a few seconds and divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll into round or elongated shapes, about 25cm x 16cm if elongated. It will seem difficult to roll out at first but as it gets thinner it will become easier. You can use your hands to stretch the dough along the way.
  • Cook on a pan or thawa on medium heat. Takes about 30 seconds on each side. Stack it in between a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  • If you are brushing it with garlic butter, place the butter and minced garlic in a bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Melt for longer if not fully melted. Mix and brush over warm naan bread. Sprinkle some freshly chopped coriander on top

Notes

  1. You don't have to brush with the garlic butter if you prefer plain naan bread
  2. Resting the dough for 30 minutes relaxes the gluten giving you a soft naan bread
  3. You have to roll out the dough really thin but it does puff up once toasted. If you prefer thicker you can make them slightly smaller in size
  4. I find re-heating the naan bread on a pan makes them beautfully crisp and even more delicious

  1. Hi.

My sister and I both tried this recipe. Mine was soft and fluffy. Hers was not. What did she do wrong?

Also at what stage do you add the baking powder? You mention with the oil and milk and then again with the flour.

    Many thanks!

    1. Hi Riona! My apologies. The flour and baking powder go together. That was an error in step one. I have corrected it. Did your sister knead the dough well and let it rest? The kneading helps with the soft texture. Also altitude plays a great role in the amount of liquid we use so not sure if her dough was perhaps too dry or too wet?

  2. Thanks! Will tell her. She is in Durban and I am in Johannesburg. So maybe it was the altitude.

I have decided to use this period of lockdown to expand my cooking and baking skills and came across your blog. What a find! I’m always on the hunt for easy recipes as I’m vegetarian and the kids don’t like spice whereas their dad lives for spicy curries. My daughter (she is 8), son (busy 3 year old) and I are trying new recipes everyday. We made the naan again today and it was delicious. We also marinated lamb to try your lamb kalya recipe tomorrow, fingers crossed!

    1. Thank you Riona. I hope the recipe works for you, let me know how it turns out. Glad you enjoying the naan bread recipe. Have fun cooking with your kids. Stay Safe:-)

  3. hi Lorraine. How can I modify this recipe to make it gluten-free? I assume that I cannot just substitute the flour with gluten-free flour and might have to use a bonding agent, or can I?

    1. Hi Paul! I personally have not used gluten free flour but I do know you would need to add some physillium husk to make them. For every cup of flour I think you would need about a teaspoon of physillium husk. The texture may not be exactly the same but worth a try. Good luck ????

  4. Hi Lorraine, thank you. Love this recipe, I have tried it and prefer it rather than using yoghurt I used milk which works well. I wanted to check if I could use self raising flour instead of all purpose flour this time around.

    1. Hi Maggie! Yes you can use self-raising flour. I am not sure if you have tried the 2-ingredient dough, it requires just self-raising flour and yogurt. That’s also worth a try for those busy days. Take Care:-)

    1. Hi Valencia! No I did not use any oil or butter on the pan as it was non-stick. Yes you can make it the oven although I prefer the stovetop.

    1. Hi! It is usually 1 cup of self-raising flour and about 1/2 cup of greek yogurt. Any plain yogurt can actually work too. However, please do not add all of the yogurt at once. Add enough to create a soft dough, shouldn’t be sticky. The recipe can be doubled.

  5. Hi Lorraine,
This looks super easy for rushed afternoons, will definitely be trying it. I tried the yeast version over the weekend and my family loved it.

Thank you for sharing your recipes with us.

  6. Hi Lorraine. Absolutely love your blog! it has become my daily go to, my husband is still trying to figure out how my cooking went from very average to quite good, I’m yet to tell him my tamarind and thyme secret lol.

I’ve tried your roti and puri recipe with great success on first attempt however I’m struggling with the naan. if you’re able to upload pictures of your dough the next time you’re making them, that would be great!

    xx

Love this recipe and make it regularly. I like to do a double batch and keep in the freezer. So easy. Beautiful with curries, soups and stews
