Hi, I’m Lorraine—the cook, writer, and heart behind Tamarind and Thyme. If you’ve ever doubted your ability to cook, let me assure you: you’re in the right place. My recipes are designed to be easy, approachable, and absolutely delicious—so that even the most novice cook can look and feel like a pro in the kitchen.

My Journey

I live a simple, unpretentious life in Johannesburg, South Africa—fondly known as the City of Gold. But my culinary journey began in Durban, where food and family were inseparable. It was there, in a warm and vibrant home, that I learned how to cook and discovered all the little secrets that make Indian food so full of love and soul.

Though I spent many years in the corporate world, I always knew it wasn’t my true calling. When I finally left that world behind, I started this blog as a hobby—and by 2019, it had grown into something much deeper: a passion, a purpose, and a platform.

More Than Just a Food Blog

Tamarind and Thyme is more than a collection of recipes—it’s a piece of my heart. Alongside comforting dishes, I share parts of my life: the joy, the pain, the healing. I’ve survived an abusive relationship. I’ve struggled with low self-esteem. I live with two autoimmune conditions. And through it all, I’ve found peace in the kitchen and strength in storytelling.

I don’t share my journey for sympathy. I share it to give hope—to remind other women that despite our struggles, we can rise, thrive, and become the best version of ourselves. In a world where abuse is still far too common, especially against women and children, I hope my voice can make even the smallest difference.

The Kitchen Is My Happy Place

Living with chronic fatigue isn’t easy, but cooking keeps me grounded. The kitchen is where I come alive—it’s my therapy, my creative outlet, and my sanctuary. Whether I’m recreating childhood favorites or experimenting with something new, cooking brings me back to myself.

I don’t follow a strict diet—I believe in balance, in eating everything in moderation. You’ll find a bit of everything here, but you’ll especially find lots of spicy, comforting Indian dishes. These are the recipes that connect me to home, to my roots, and to memories worth reliving.
